finally! bare the musical
In Sacramento, of all places.
When I heard that finally! Bare: a pop opera was going to be performed in Northern California twice within the span of a year...I was so excited. I had downloaded the 11 song sampler right before I moved to NYC, and even saw the Bare posters on the wall of the New World Stages, before investors pulled out and essentially pulled the plug on the whole show.
Having only heard the sampler CD and falling instantly in love with it...I finally had the chance to see the show and see how the songs actually fit in with the story. Sacramento's ambitious regional theater, Artistic Differences is performing it in a month-long run, and I highly recommend this local production, a great peek into a fabulous musical, especially in preparation for the highly anticipated 2009 production of Bare directed by Stafford Arrima (Altar Boyz) & tentatively scheduling local talent James Snyder as the lead.
Furthermore, rumors are that James Snyder, Sacramento-local musical theater gone Broadway, will be one or two pre-show performances as well this month, definitely might be worth catching at the Space.
Well, all I can say is that in this great intimate theater, talented cast...technical difficulties withstanding where songs to words were lost due to misfunctioning mics, it was great to finally understand where the songs I am familiar with... fit in with the story. ("Are you There" *isn't* sung by the two main lead guys!) The story (as I now understand it) is essentially a Brokeback Mountain set in a Catholic high school. The men are especially strong in the cast, especially Lucas Blair as Peter (played by the talented Michael Arden in NYC), Joshua James as Matt, and an ensemble member Benjamin Ismail as hilarious Alan. Among the women, I liked Joelle Wirth the best, she sang with such ease, sarcastic wit covering thinly her pain as Nadia, "Plain Jane Fat Ass".
A bare-bones production with no A/C (ack!), talent shines past the rafters of this warehouse theater. I love when I find local theater treasures...let's support local community groups, especially when they are performing such cutting-edge shows like Bare.
Check out one of the most awesome songs, Role of a Lifetime. Fall in love with the song, then download the 11 song sampler.
