Ken and I saw "Raise the Red Lantern" today at BAM..what a beautiful piece of art. Combining theatrics, good acting, amazing dancing (those extensions & arabesques) were breathtaking; the guy who directed this also directed "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers". You could feel the theatrics, the drama, and the history behind this piece of work. So beautiful.
I couldn't help but feel that China has a sizeable advantage over Korea; the Chinese dancers are so tall and slender...I guess you can really select for the very best out of a country with a population of 1.5 billion, whereas Korea has some shorter ballerinas, with only 40 million people to pick from....Yuan Yuan Tan is another ballerina that comes to mind when I think of Chinese ballerinas. Sue Jin Kang is a Korean ballerina; who is a principal at Stuttgart Ballet. I hear she is amazing; I hope to see her dance someday.
